Pomegranate Fields, Cliffside Steps, and Views That Stop You in Your Tracks

Set in the Hajar Mountains at 2,000 metres, the Three Village Walk connects the ancient villages of Al Aqr, Al Ayn and Ash Shirayjah through terraced orchards, traditional stone houses, and a falaj irrigation system that has been running water through these cliffs for centuries. We only made it to two of the three villages with the kids, but the rustic pathways, the cliffside stone steps, and the mountain views more than made up for it. The trail is well marked, lined with a sturdy fence throughout, and completely free — most families need between one and three hours depending on how far they go.

For those who want more, the trail continues beyond the three villages into longer hikes over the mountains, passing secluded villages and cafes with terraces overlooking the valley. It is the kind of place that rewards you for going further, and the cool mountain air at this elevation makes hiking feel completely different from anything you will do closer to Dubai.

Insider tip: you need a 4x4 to drive up Jebel Akhdar — a standard car will not get you there. The best time to visit is spring, when the rose gardens are in bloom and the terraces are at their greenest. Entry is free, and no booking is required.
