Sharks, Capybaras, and the Largest Aquarium in the Middle East

The National Aquarium at Al Qana in Abu Dhabi is genuinely impressive — 46,000 animals across 10 themed zones covering sharks, rays, crocodiles, reptiles, birds flying freely overhead, and a glass bottom dhow tour through the tanks. What sets it apart from other aquariums in the region is the Wildlife Rescue Centre, run in partnership with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi — rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing native wildlife back into the wild. Many of the animals you see here have a story. Nyokoti and Sengou, the two African manatees, were relocated from South Korea as part of a conservation project and are now thriving — the closest African manatees in the world to their native West Africa.

But the absolute highlight for us was the capybara feeding experience. For around AED 20 per person you get to feed and interact with the world's most relaxed animals up close — genuinely one of the best add-on experiences at any UAE attraction. Just note it is only available when the capybaras do not have babies to care for, so check ahead. Tickets start from around AED 99 with various upgrade options. Under-3s enter free, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult aged 16+. Open daily 10am to 10pm.
