The Oldest Mangroves in the UAE — and Deer Grazing Right Beside Them

Khor Al Kalba Mangrove Centre sits on the east coast of Sharjah about 1.5 to 2 hours from Dubai, and it feels genuinely far removed from the city in the best possible way. The mangrove trees here are the oldest in the Emirates, with some reaching up to 8 metres tall, and the wooden boardwalk trail that winds through them is quiet, shaded, and beautiful. We started with lunch at the centre's terrace restaurant before heading out — a good move, as the outdoor walkway needs a bit of energy. Inside the centre, marine exhibits cover the local ecosystem with crabs, sea cucumbers, starfish, and turtle pools where injured turtles are rehabilitated before being released. There is also an aviary and a dedicated kingfisher hide — the rare Arabian Collared Kingfisher lives in this mangrove system and spotting one is genuinely exciting. Entry is AED 15 for adults, children under 13 are free, and the centre is open Tuesday to Thursday 9am to 6:30pm, Saturday 11am to 6:30pm, Friday 2pm to 6:30pm, and closed on Mondays.

Insider tip: go in the cooler months between October and March — the wildlife is more active, the walk is more comfortable, and the mountain backdrop behind the mangroves looks its best in clear winter light.
