JA Beach Resort is one of those places Dubai families have been coming back to for decades, and once you arrive it is obvious why. What I did not expect was the birds. Near the horse stables, the resort quietly cares for a collection of wild birds — some being nursed back to health, some in training for release, some working birds for shows. The rooms are on the smaller side compared to newer Dubai properties, but comfortable and well set up for families — sea view rooms look out over the pools and beach, and the garden villas sit in the kind of lush greenery that does not feel like it should exist this close to the city.

Insider tip: the three hotels share all facilities, so wherever you stay you have access to everything. Palm Tree Court is the quietest and closest to the beach — worth requesting if you are travelling with very small children.
